Seaford College
Seaford College is an independent school located at the base of the South Downs escarpment in the heart of the National Park. Working on very steep and challenging ground we had the task of clear-felling a 6 ha crop of overstood Western Red Cedar.
The work was carried out over the restricted time frame of summer school holidays to avoid issues around the school operations. However, the summer school was active, the site had footpaths running around the perimeter and there were many environmental considerations and constraints to consider.
We worked closely with the school, local stakeholders and English Woodlands Forestry to plan the works in advance, providing comprehensive health and safety documentation to ensure the works were executed safety.
Steep Ground…
Steep ground – most of the site was worked with our harvester as part of a very skilled operation. Additional areas also had a winch operation where the machine could not reach.
Tight Timescales
Tight timescales – we broke the work schedule down into two tightly managed phases to ensure we could complete each section (including extraction) within the short window of the school summer holidays.
Timber income
Timber income covered the cost of the felling operation. Our method of using mechanical harvesting for the majority of the works enabled us to complete the works and provide some income for the school to contribute to the following restocking scheme.
